I have a big issue with sites such as Tumblr, Ffffound and Pinterest. As much as I love inspiration boards and sharing images, I find it incredibly frustrating when I cannot find any information at all about a particular image. While perusing photos of houses on ffffound.com today I am unable to find the architect, location or even photographer of a single photograph. I imagine most people would agree that this is a problem but I don't know what the solution is: include photo credits in the file name? Still, other information is lost; cite the source of a photo when you share it? I know a lot of people who do this consistently, but not everyone. Once an image is shared without a link to its source, finding its origins becomes exponentially more difficult.
People deserve to be credited for their work and patrons deserve to know whose work they're admiring.
On that note, these houses are beautiful and if someone could tell me something about them I would be grateful.

- m4w - 36 (Brooklyn)
You had pink fingernails and got on the Q train at Atlantic (if not Dekalb). I felt an irrational desire to invite you out to dinner. I found you stunningly beautiful, but you'll probably never know. I think you changed trains at Times Square and I watched as you stepped between closing doors and disappeared. If for some reason you check this, It'd be nice to hear from you. Either way, I hope you're well.

Stag 16 auction for the homeless
On November 15th, Graham and Green, the British luxury interiors and homeware shop, will launch an auction of their resin stag heads reworked by some of the most popular contemporary artists and designers in the UK. Proceeds go to Centrepoint to support young homeless people in London.
I love this idea! Graham and Green's eccentric wall pieces are an exciting and unconventional canvas for any artist, as evident by how differently they turned out. I would love to see Stephen Webster's dark dollhouse stag up close.
Among the artists are Ronnie Wood, Monolo Blahnik and Rob Ryan:

Rob Ryan: judging books by their covers
On Friday I received an early birthday card from my mom. Surprise! A Rob Ryan card that I had admired in the Saatchi Gallery gift shop when I first moved to London and my parents were visiting. Apparently, my sweet and sneaky mother bought the card that day!
The first time I saw Rob Ryan's work was in an airport book store. I bought John Connolly's The Book of Lost Things because of it's gorgeous, whimsical cover and read the modern fairy tale during my travels.

A few years later, I read Dara Horn's The World to Come because it was recommended to me on Amazon and had a familiar, cut-paper cover. Finally, I discovered This is For You, a stunning, romantic book comprised of Rob Ryan's prose about love intricately cut from paper. The introduction reads, "If you believe in love, but find it difficult to explain--this is for you." When I found it years ago, I bought this book for my mother and now that she's sent me my own Rob Ryan piece, we've come full circle.
Enjoy Rob Ryan's portfolio and visit his Etsy shop!

let this be our little secret / no one needs to know we're feeling / higher and higher and higher

Recently listening to Passion Pit's album "Manners" quite a bit; I dig music that inspires uncontrollable dancing upon listening. These songs make sitting still nearly impossible.
Passion Pit re-released a deluxe edition of the album last year with artwork by Robert Seidel, whose digital work looks simultaneously mechanical and organic. If liquid paint could be applied with a keyboard, this is how it would look.

Diligenza per la Luna, 1836

Diligenza de Ritorno Dalla Luna

Scopterta Lunare

"This portfolio of hand-tinted lithographs purports to illustrate the "Discovery of Life on the Moon." In 1836, Richard E. Locke, writing for the New York Sun, claimed that the noted British astronomer Sir William Herschel had discovered life on the moon. Flora and fauna included bat-men, moon maidens (with luna-moth wings), moon bison, and other extravagant life forms. Locke proposed an expedition to the moon using a ship supported by hydrogen balloons."

the trouble with objects
The more objects you have, the more you need and want. When you move into a new house, you fill it with stuff, and most of it is arbitrary. I spent several hours yesterday looking at throw pillows online. Who needs throw pillows? We do, because our living room is white, grey and birch wood and needs that pop of color. I don't want to be a person who places too much value in objects, but when I discover textile designers like Joel Dewberry and Amy Burton I become completely preoccupied with throw pillows.
I am in love with this Joel Dewberry pine pattern.

I am drawn to textiles that reference nature but prefer trees, shells and fauna over flora.

Eyelashes!

Oh, and I bought the Icarus light.

house of hay

I found this image on this graphic design blog and it had no photo credit.
Something about the image is so enchanting and bizarre. I believe it's been rotated 90 degrees because the gradient of the sky is horizontal, rather than vertical. This would mean that the subject is holding himself up quite gracefully, horizontal to the ground. I keep studying the picture with my head cocked to the side, and I just don't know.
But I'm bothered by the lack of a photo credit. While we have the ability to easily access and quickly share an unlimited amount of information, content spreads so quickly that it frequently becomes anonymous, no longer attached to an author, artist, creator.
WHO IS THIS GUY AND DOES HE LIVE IN A HOUSE OF HAY? Tell me his story.

blackwhitegold

While enjoying the monthly Los Angeles Art Walk last week, I stumbled upon a wall of almost exclusively black and white collages/paintings that I'm still thinking about after returning to DC. Juxtaposing industrial objects such as windmills and sky scrapers with nature, Patrick Haemmerlein designs his work fusing photographs of LA (where he currently resides) and of his hometown in upstate New York.
Also bought a real black oak leaf dipped in gold to wear around my neck.

Type love.

Just received Bruce Willen and Nolen Strals' book Lettering & Type in the mail! It came out in October 2009 complete with a forward by the fabulous Ellen Lupton. I am very proud to see the work of a few friends and classmates throughout: Lusine Sargsyan's Matchstick Alphabet,

and some work by classmates Hayley Griffin and Adam Okrasinski.
I just learned that the Dishwasher Pete poster that I have admired for so long in the MICA Brown center was designed by Oliver Munday, a MICA grad whom I don't really know but whose work I admire.

Some work by Marian Bantjes is also featured in Lettering & Type. One of my MICA professor's, Jennifer Cole Phillips, first introduced me to Marian Bantjes' work when she spoke at MICA. Unfortunately, I missed the lecture but instantly fell in love with her lush, ornate lettering. I wish I knew her personally so that I could receive her annual valentines that are different every year. I think my favorites were from 2008 when she drew up a heart-shaped alphabet:

Perhaps this year I should send out my very own valentines.
