Type love.
Just received Bruce Willen and Nolen Strals' book Lettering & Type in the mail! It came out in October 2009 complete with a forward by the fabulous Ellen Lupton. I am very proud to see the work of a few friends and classmates throughout: Lusine Sargsyan's Matchstick Alphabet,
and some work by classmates Hayley Griffin and Adam Okrasinski.
I just learned that the Dishwasher Pete poster that I have admired for so long in the MICA Brown center was designed by Oliver Munday, a MICA grad whom I don't really know but whose work I admire.
Some work by Marian Bantjes is also featured in Lettering & Type. One of my MICA professor's, Jennifer Cole Phillips, first introduced me to Marian Bantjes' work when she spoke at MICA. Unfortunately, I missed the lecture but instantly fell in love with her lush, ornate lettering. I wish I knew her personally so that I could receive her annual valentines that are different every year. I think my favorites were from 2008 when she drew up a heart-shaped alphabet:
Perhaps this year I should send out my very own valentines.
